After publishing six books through my company Cyclops Press, I am about to publish my first novel. Shibboleth is a novel of both the sacred and profane, a mix of smut and philosophy. It is a story with moral pur
pose, based on an extraordinary account of one man’s journey along a less trampled path. The overriding thematic concern of Shibboleth is the search for Truth. It is a meditation on good and evil, and a love story that explores the rift between love and trust. Will Oliphard begins his journey with a restless existential romp through an extraordinary period in human history. Along the way he meets a collection of unlikely mentors, and is initiated into an ancient culture misunderstood as an outmoded shibboleth. This vast pool of spirituality and knowledge explains the genesis of mankind and the truth of our nature. It also holds clues to the fate of humanity. Increasingly Will is drawn into violent acts, including kidnapping, and even murder. He is wounded in love and war, imprisoned and tortured. In turn he is enlightened, and shown the secrets of the universe. Eventually, Will’s own dark gifts are revealed to him. Shibboleth is breathtaking in its scope. It has all the makings of a page turning
adventure story, complete with lashings of satire, humour, pathos, love, sex, drugs, rock’n’roll, violence, politics,
mystery, philosophy, creation, international cities, complex characters … and no less than the meaning of life. What truly elevates a book to the highest level is a truly great, talented and experienced editor. So, firstly, I’m looking to raise money to engage the right editor. It is such an important part of the process and will make all the difference to the final product. This accounts for the lion’s share of the target money. Next, I will need further funds to design and publish a Limited Edition print run of 1000 paperback copies of the book. Despite having published six books and been involved in several others, this is my first novel. I have labored over this for several years without funding and have taken on part-time work to keep going. There is much more work yet to be done. Hence I need your help. I have had several readers look at the first draft and give it the thumbs up. I estimate that my editor will need several months to line edit the book. Then I will need to work two months full time on those notes, and have the work vetted by legal eagles. All going well, you will have the book in your hands within 12 months. I’m committed to finishing this project and getting it out there, as I believe it has an important message. Big thanks to Louise Whelan for making the video.
