Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is a Social Enterprise community hub for musicians and music-lovers, artists, creatives and industry-related crew, designed as a safe haven where you can dream, create, collaborate, inspire and motivate.
With a dream hatched in the Nevada Desert, three wanderer’s & a dog’s paths aligned and all were inspired to create a positive and collaborative space back in Australia upon return. Less than 12 months later Mo’s Desert Clubhouse was born.
What we do now:
We pride ourselves on not only promising a memorable experience, but every experience and idea has a charitable backbone and purpose to better our wider-community in anyway we can.
In 12 months of operation we have seen the space transform not just physically but also in terms of community, having grown a sizeable support base on the back of individual and collaborative idea execution. We have raised over $10K for local charities and work our assess off to provide the Gold Coast creative community with the start-up tools and space they need to create and collaborate on projects of interest.
Our spaces currently include co-working office spaces, a band practice room, a hireable warehouse for gigs, functions, events and workshops, a meeting room and small bar area.
We’ve hosted EP launches, tour shows and minifests, Fashion shows, charity events, macrame and dance workshops, movie nights, All Ages discos, life drawing classes, birthday celebrations and much more.
Where we’re looking to head:
From 2019 on the back of a successful council and liquor licensing application (fingers crossed), we’d love to reactivate Mo’s Desert Clubhouse to include not only the above-mentioned activites, but also align with like-minded social enterprises such as bringing back the iconic Thryft GC store (we hear your requests) whilst launching ‘The Snake Pit’ coffee shop in our front room so that you can visit us everyday!
With official council approval we can increase our offerings of local and touring bands, creative workshops, charity events, safe underage events and private functions in a bid to make Mo’s a central hub for creatives from all over the Gold Coast and world. We want to continue supporting Community Causes and hosting Charity Events. We love the support you’ve shown us so far and we want to in turn reward you with an even better space that caters for a necessary gap in the current local cultural market.
Why we need your help:
To keep this beautiful space of ours alive, we are required to undergo a series of tests, stages and applications over the next six months which cost some serious dollars. We have sunk all of our funds into the venutre thus far to keep the doors open, whilst being restricted in our ability to make an income and pay bills until the application process is finalised. Over the last 12mths we have sunk around $40,000 of our own money into keeping Mo’s alive and upon being in the game for a short amount of time, realise just what we’re up against. The next six months of applications, consultations and expense will make or break us. But, on the back of your amazing and constant support, we are keen to hit the go button and give it a crack! No regrets.
The upcoming additional cost of keeping Mo’s Alive:
DA Preparation (Council Application)
• Town Planning Report: $7,500 plus GST; (based on no further hours spent)
• Acoustics Report: $2,950.00 plus GST;
• Traffic/Parking: $5,380.00 plus GST; (based on no further hours spent)
• Waste Information: TBA
• Council Application Fee: Hoping for agreed fee of $5-7k
DA after Lodgement
• All Consultants for RFI Response: $4,000 plus GST.
• Public Notification Specialist: $1,500 plus GST
• Planner: Post-PN $2,000 plus GST
Liquor License Application – $4,855.65
Total: $35,185.65 plus GST
MO’S RENT (6 MONTHS INTERIM OF MINIMAL ACTIVATIONS): $24,746.70
Total: $59,932.35 plus GST
The application process will take around 6mths in total and is not even a guaranteed result. All of this money outlay could actually be for nothing if council or ‘our resident complainers’ decide we are not a viable and wanted entity in Burleigh. We are not corporate backed people trying to make a profit here, just 3 creatives trying our best to give the community what it so desparately needs! We’ve almost thrown in the towel from the pressure and expense on many occasion but have now decided ‘it’s now or never’.
Without going into too much detail, the reason all of these fees and costs are so high is because we are a unique business model that doesn’t fit into any of the categories currently listed under the Council’s zoning laws and permitted use. We are outside of the box (literally) and therefore, to continue doing all of the wonderful things we are doing, we are working with the city council and liquor licensing consultants to create our own zone, or as we like to call the “Mo’s-Zone”.
The passing of this new ‘zone’ will not only allow us to continue to trade and improve our business offering, but also allow these type of creative industries to be recognised by our council, simplifying the way for future creative ventures of which we know many of you are starting/running yourselves.
It will also save Django our blind frenchies home, he has so many more laps to sit on!

We are all currently working as hard as we can to raise this capital whilst trying to do the best we can with Mo’s considering our now limited ability to operate, but truth be told it will be a struggle. If you’ve seen what we do here and would like to make a financial contribution to the cause, please do so. There are no $ expectations, simply if you can afford to drop a few bucks and love what we do, then we will do our best to soldier on and make Mo’s a place for everyone to enjoy in the future.
