The project

Guardy’s hut was built in the 1940’s for a Bullock Drover (Bill Guard) to live in whilst he tended the bullocks for the timber teams in the Yarraman Forestry. It was built from recycled materials at that time and has served as a hut and living quarters for a range of people over the years, including our young family when we were renovating our own home. It has a great rustic feel about it, as well as some more modern amenities and small off-grid solar to run electrical appliances. But it’s seen better days. There have been termites in some parts which has resulted in rotten timber in the structure and cattle have gotten into the yard and damaged some of the exterior.

Our vision is for a comfortable, yet authentic farmhouse hut farm-stay for families and couples to enjoy the peace and tranquility of our farm and surrounding forestry and national park. Nothing fancy, just all the things for a relaxing, regenerating, enjoyable farmstay break.

Where

Situated on the edge of the South Burnett, only 2 hours from Brisbane, 1.5hrs from Toowoomba, 2hrs from the Sunshine Coast and 20 minutes to the Bunya Mountains, we think it is ideally suited for a fantastic, relaxing long weekend stay or school holiday base to the many different attractions in our area. We have an amazing array of bird species within the neighbouring forestry area and are situated only 15 minutes from the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Yarraman. Not to mention that the hut is located within a working beef cattle farm and paddock to plate operation.

What needs doing?

The main areas that need work on the hut are the roof (where rot has set in – complete replacement needed), bathroom revamp and closing in of some rooms to make for a more private, comfortable experience. We also want to fix up and roof the deck, address the timber floors and update the solar array. If we raise enough money, we’d also like to include some luxuries like a timber, wood-fired hot-tub on the deck that looks out over the paddock and from which you can see the amazing country night sky! How great would that be?

Why we need your help

We need to make sure this project is done properly by professionals who can make sure that Guardy’s Hut meets building standards and for this reason we need to employ builders to do the work. We already have a lot of the timber needed for the job (we’ve milled it from our own block), but we need to pay for the labour and expertise to put it in. We had planned to do this over the next 12 months or so, but thought we could get it up and running much quicker with some help from our friends to support some of the costs. If you’d like to come and stay in the finished product, perhaps you can forward buy your holiday now and help us get it going.

About Us

Since 2013, we’ve been serving customers throughout SE Qld with our premium, 100% grassfed, Angus beef, delivered to their front door. HighBrit Beef is our paddock to plate beef business that supplies our premium beef as well as the pastured pork and, are soon to add pastured chicken, of other nearby farms. We have an ethical farming ethos, with a low input, low stress approach to producing and raising our animals. That not only means our animals are healthy and well-looked after, but it also produces a better quality product.

We also offer open-days on farm and have been asked about providing accomodation on farm too. That’s why we thought our old hut might be due for a rejuvenation and spruce up, so that folks can visit our farm and enjoy our surroundings without needing to camp in the paddock and ‘rough it’.

We hope we can get our little farm-stay off the ground soon, so that everyone can enjoy our farm and surrounding area. Thanks for your interest and support.
