We're raising funds to start a new not-for-profit social enterprise (sewing project)

Akina Ties Crisis Accommodation Centre

Flexible Funding
New South Wales, Australia

imageThis is my good friend Lilian Marwa – I met Lil when I visited Mission in Action – Kenya in 2012. Lilian now runs the Akina Ties Crisis Accommodation Centre in Kissi, western Kenya. The centre is home to up to 18 abandoned and abused kids and support staff.

Lilian and her kids have been renting homes and have had to move home four times in the past year. This has meant wasting time and money on renovations on four occasions. Thankfully an Aussie couple (from Northern NSW) have come to the rescue and given Lilian enough to build their very own home. Building started two weeks ago – they don’t mess around in Kenya!

I am hoping to raise funds so that Lil and the older girls can learn to sew and start a small sewing business so that they can generate some income and learn some vital life-long skills. I’m hoping to employ a seamstress to teach the girls and buy a couple of sewing machines and enough materials to get them started on making simple items such as tote bags and aprons.

To support this little project please make your donation here!

All donations of more than $25 will receive a personal thank you card from the children of Akina Ties.

Please also help us out by sharing this page with your friends and family – the person who shares the most will receive the very first apron when we go into production!

Thank you to everyone who made a pledge through this page - you shou ld now have received your personalised letters from the children of Akina Ties. They have been sent to the e-mail you provided to this page when you made your pledge. You will receive the original version in August as we have a friend visiting Kenya who will bring the letters back by plane then.

After all the various bank fees and crowdfunding fees I ended up sending just short of $1100 to Kenya today. Lilian has already ordered fabrics and patterns and has a seamstress lined up. She hopes to buy a sewing machine very soon and to have the first simple sewing projects completed and ready for sale by the end of August. We will be selling the Akina Ties sewing project products via our website, which should be up and running in the next month. Watch this space!
