Beautiful hand-crafted jewelries, bags, accessories and more… Hold Mama Africa is a small independent non-profit charity organization founded in Australia in 2014. Its mission is to empower single mothers in rural and urban areas in Kenya by providing lasting sustainable employment and income for single mothers and their families. It provides women with valuable training on how to use recycled materials to create handed crafted items that are then sold online. You can directly help these mothers by purchasing one of the great gifts they’ve created here. Hold Mama Africa was inspired by the personal experience of Julia Ohnuma. A young Australian-Japanese woman, Julia was deeply inspired by meeting and listening to life stories of mothers in Kenya who have been going through hardships such as poverty and domestic violence. Julia came up with an idea to make a difference within the communities. Message from our founder Julia Ohnuma:
“I, Julia Ohnuma from Australia (originally from Japan) had the opportunity to travel to Kenya for two months during my university holidays. During my travels in Kenya, I had the chance to get to know the local people and listen to their life stories. Some of the most powerful and inspiring stories I came across were those told by single-Kenyan-mother’s living in poverty. With the help of a Kenyan mother who specializes in making unique hand-made crafts, we developed the idea of training more women living in poor urban and rural communities to make hand-made crafts with recycling materials. Through developing a partnership with the single-Kenyan-mother’s, I am working to continue to sell these hand-made crafts here in Australia whilst passing on the profits to the single-Kenyan-mothers’ community. Any support will help make these mothers life better and is why I am launching a crowdfunding campaign with Ready Fund Go. Hopefully this will raise much needed funds and at the same time open up and expose our online store to distribute the Kenyan mothers hand crafted products into Australia.”
Julia travels rural and urban areas to train underprivileged mothers to develop skills they can carry into their everyday life, training these mothers to create hand-made crafts and accessories. The products are sold locally and online. The proceeds are then returned to the mothers and the production of their craft.
OBJECTIVE ONE Provide opportunities for underprivileged Kenyan mothers to access practical skills training and to gain appropriate knowledge needed in their everyday lives.
OBJECTIVE TWO Empower underprivileged Kenyan mothers to establish themselves in financially independent households with proper shelter, food, education and health care.
OBJECTIVE THREE Mobilize local and intentional partners to support sustainable development of mother communities in Kenya rural areas. Positive results will ensure a brighter future for them and their family. Want to meet some of the mothers? Read their stories here or watch these videos:
If you could help our campaign in another way, we would love to ask you to check out our website and shop online! Moreover, we would be very very happy to invite you to the villages where our mother members actually work on creating the beautiful products! Not only that you can see them working, you can also listen to their life stories and maybe help them with more design ideas 🙂 For more information, please visit our website, www.holdmamaafrica.com!
